Reiki – The Importance of Self Treatment and Meditation

When was the last time you took a moment for yourself? In today’s hectic and fast paced world we need to slow down and recharge our batteries. Self care, self treatment with Reiki and meditation. The perfect antidote to the chaos around us!

For those attuned to Reiki, you are taught from level 1 about the importance of self healing. Daily practice with Reiki can really help to give you some much needed time out. You can incorporate it into your daily meditation practice as well if you wish.

Stop laughing … I can hear you all now – daily meditation practice haha. What is that? I don’t have time for all that chanting and stuff!

Finding time for Reiki

We all have the same amount of time in our days – 24 hours. It is how you choose to spend your time that dictates what you “have time for”. I have been known to use the “I don’t have time” excuse myself. However, I realised though that the reason I didn’t have time was because I was watching too much TV and wasting time on Facebook or surfing the web. Sometimes I procrastinate and do things because I am “busy”. For example, checking emails or researching ideas on the internet – which invariably ends up as mindless scrolling.

If something is important to you then you will make time for it. This is where self-treating with Reiki comes in. When you take 10-15 minutes out of your day to sit and just allow Reiki to flow, it is incredibly relaxing and calming. If you can make the effort to fit it into your daily routine the benefits will far outweigh any initial inconvenience you may feel. In fact, it will get to the point that you will need this time and you will miss it if you do not get the chance to practice.

Reiki Precepts

Dr Usui taught all his Reiki students to sit in mindful meditation each day, with their hands in Gassho (prayer position) and had them focus on the Reiki principles. This was an integral part of his Reiki teachings. Reiki is so much more than a healing modality – it is a spiritual practice, allowing you a deep connection with Source. When you contemplate the Reiki precepts you deepen your understanding. They are more than just words on a page.

Usui’s precepts show that mindful meditation and Reiki go hand in hand. You can use this time to stop, open yourself to Reiki and be fully present. This will help to lower blood pressure, slow your breathing and heart rate and bring about a sense of calm. They are deeply linked to compassion, patience, wisdom and morality.

Honestly, I do not know what I would do without Reiki. I use it every day, sometimes in formal meditation practice and other times just in my day to day life. Often I put it in my shower in the morning and stir it into my tea and coffee.

It allows me to still my busy mind. The practice gives me room to breathe and time to centre myself. It helps me connect deeply with myself and allows me to hear and listen to my inner guidance.

I emphasise the importance of this daily ritual with my students. It is so important to make time for yourself every day. It is not selfish, it is an absolute human right. When your mind is clear and your body is relaxed, you operate from a much better place. Your decisions are more easily made and you can clearly communicate your needs. Why not give it a try – what are you waiting for?
