It can be difficult to remain upbeat and positive. Especially now in the midst of tighter restrictions and darker days. It is easy to fall into a fearful or negative mindset. This short article will hopefully help you find ways to remain upbeat. Take back your energy and power. Focus on what you want, not what you don’t.
Upbeat Tip 1 – Turn it off
Turn off the news and fear-mongering media. By all means, check in once a day to keep up to date with regulations. But stop checking the news every 2 minutes. The media uses sensational headlines, fear and negativity to attract your attention. The human brain is wired to look for negativity – it is a kick-back to the reptilian brain and survival. Media outlets know this and they feed on your fear. Turn it off. Be consciously aware of what you are putting into your mind garden every day. Also, unfollow negative ninnies on social media. Limit your scrolling and clean up your news feed. Follow inspirational people. You are in control of what you choose to look at on a daily basis.
Upbeat Tip 2 – Mindful Gratitude
Think about 5 things that you are grateful for and write them down. When we focus on gratitude, we automatically lift our vibration into a higher state. You cannot be fearful and grateful at the same time. You have an energetic vibration. All life does. By focusing on gratitude you rise up the vibratory scale, away from fear and negativity.
Try this – make yourself your favourite hot drink. For example, a delicious coffee. Think about how that coffee got to your cup. Be grateful for the farmer who grew the coffee beans. Think about the people who harvested the beans. The transport workers who moved them from farm to factory. Consider the workers who processed the beans into the product you used. Visualise the product being shipped to the shop where you bought it. Think about all the people involved in the chain. Be thankful for each of them. Fill with gratitude that you had the means to buy the coffee and boil fresh water for it. Can you see how this mindful gratitude shifts your perspective?
Upbeat Tip 3 – Imagination
Our imagination is one of the most powerful tools we have. Often we use it to imagine the worst – we worry and focus on what we don’t want. Let’s shift that. When you notice yourself focusing on the fear, catch yourself in the act. Consciously begin to imagine a positive image. Perhaps bring to mind someone you love and see them smiling at you. Maybe visualise yourself on a sunny beach with the water lapping at your toes. Or visualise your ideal day. Use the power of your imagination to shift your mindset to a more positive place. I do this all the time – especially if I have to do something I don’t want to do. Like go to the dentist for example! I take myself to my happy place and the stress melts away.
Upbeat Tip 4 – Have fun
What makes your heart sing? Think about the things you love to do. Maybe it’s listening to your favourite music really loud while doing the housework. Perhaps it is being outside in nature. Or maybe it is laughing til you wee a little with your bestie. It doesn’t matter what it is, simply find your fun. Sometimes when I ask people about this, they struggle to know what makes their heart sing. We can get so used to being on auto-pilot that we forget who we are and what makes us laugh. I promise you – the fun is in there. You just may need to allow yourself a moment to find it. What did you enjoy as a child? When was the last time you jumped in puddles or coloured in? Let your inner child out to play and shift your mood. I promise it works a treat!
Upbeat Tip 5 – Use aromatherapy
Smells have such a powerful effect on your psyche. A certain scent can trigger powerful memories and mood changes. Try using uplifting aromatherapy blends in your diffuser or oil burner. Essential oils are wonderful little mood enhancers. You can diffuse them, put drops in an oil burner, or add a few drops to your clothing or bedsheets. Why not create a lovely uplifting ritual and have a gorgeous bath with essential oils and luxurious natural products. Pamper yourself, allow yourself some time out. Make yourself feel good. Relax in a bath, listen to a guided meditation, diffuse your oils … there are so many ways to do this. Give it a try.
