Remembering Dorothy’s Lesson
When I was little, I loved The Wizard of Oz. I can still picture Dorothy clicking those sparkly red heels and realising she’d always had the power to go home.
As a child, that felt magical. As an adult, it feels like a lesson we all keep forgetting.
Most of us spend a good chunk of our lives waiting for someone else to tell us we can go home – to ourselves, to our truth, to our power. We search outside ourselves for authority, thinking the answer must be with the guru, the coach, the saviour, or the latest person with a viral prophecy on TikTok.
But deep down? We already know.
Why the Journey Matters
Dorothy didn’t fail because she didn’t know. She simply wasn’t ready to believe it. She had to walk the yellow brick road first. And she had to face the witch, survive the flying monkeys, and discover what courage, heart, and friendship really meant.
It was only through the journey that she finally trusted the power had been hers all along.
And isn’t that the way for all of us? People can tell you a hundred times that you are powerful, that you can choose a different life, that you hold the keys to your freedom. But until you’ve faced your own trenches – the heartbreaks, the doubts, the losses, the moments you thought you couldn’t go on – the words don’t sink in.
The Trap of Outsourcing Your Power
We forget that power isn’t something we’re given. It’s something we claim.
That’s why outsourcing your life to other people’s opinions or waiting for someone to save you is such a trap. Nobody is riding in on a cloud to fix it for you. Not the wizard, not Glinda, not the preacher, not the politician, not the TikTok prophet.
It’s you.
It’s always been you.
Terrifying and Liberating
And yes – that can feel terrifying. Because if you stop waiting to be rescued, then you have to admit you’re responsible for what happens next.
But it’s also liberating. Because if you’ve always had the power, then you’re free to use it.
You want freedom? Claim it.
You want healing? Choose it.
You want a new chapter? Write it.
The Yellow Brick Road of Real Life
The yellow brick road isn’t some magical shortcut to Oz. It’s your life. Your messy, beautiful, unpredictable, frustrating, soul-shaping journey. Every twist and turn is shaping you into the person who can finally click your heels and believe: I’ve had the power all along.
Dorothy had to learn it the hard way. Most of us do. But once you realise it? You’ll never look outside yourself in the same way again.
So, let me ask you this: when are you going to click your heels?
