Learn more about the cards
Nobody really knows but it is thought that Tarot cards date back to the 1400’s. They are not only used for divination but also for self-analysis and meditation. The 78 card deck is divided into 2 sections, the 22 major arcana cards and the 56 minor arcana cards. The major arcana deals with life events and is often referred to as The Fool’s Journey.
The journey through the major arcana is a metaphor for the journey through life. Each of the 22 cards (numbered 0-21) represents a point on the journey. The overall concept is that a person must move through these various stages in life in order to realise their true calling. The minor arcana cards are divided up into 4 suits – just like playing cards. The suits run from the Ace all the way to the King. Unlike playing cards they have an additional court card – they have a page, knight, queen and king whereas playing cards have only the jack, queen and king. The 4 suits are wands, coins, cups and swords. Debi uses a deck called Tarot of the Old Path which is based on Wiccan traditional symbolism so her readings will reference Cauldrons for Cups, Pentacles for Coins and Rods for Wands. The minor arcana deal more with day to day situations, work, family, relationships, intellect etc. whereas the major arcana concerns itself with major life events in general.
Anyone can learn to read the Tarot. Just like angel cards the Tarot is simply a tool for accessing the knowledge that you already have within you. We are all connected and we all have access to the collective unconscious. The Tarot helps us connect with our intuition to find the answers we are seeking.
About Debi
Debi is a member of the Tarot Association of the British Isle and has been reading the cards for several years. She uses them as a tool for analysis and reflection rather than a “fortune-telling” tool. Debi prefers to work with you to demystify the Tarot in order to remove the fear that surrounds these cards. She has online courses and a spiritual community space to help other people learn how to interpret the cards. Details of courses can be found on Tarot Workshops page.
Debi offers a Tarot reading service tailored for you. For £60 you can submit your question to her and she will consult the cards, prepare a detailed reading for you in response to your question and will email you with a link to a voice recording, transcript and image of the cards within 7 days.
Please note during holidays or busy periods there may be a longer waiting time however Debi will confirm that with you at the time should such a delay be in place.
Getting the most from your reading
Your question is important – when approaching the Tarot for answers you should avoid questions with yes/no answers. You should ask for insight into situations rather than asking closed questions.
For example if you are having problems with your home life or living situation, asking a question such as “What can I do to improve my current living situation” is better than asking “How can I get xxx to move out?” The latter question assumes that the person will move out when in fact the answer to your question may be that you will find somewhere else to live.
By asking open questions you greatly improve the reading you will get. You should always work with your Tarot reader to ask the best question so that you get a meaningful response from the cards.
Also note that good Tarot readers will help you with this and will also not answer any questions related to games of chance, the lottery or anything for which they are not properly qualified – like financial investments, legal advice or other such matters.
What the cards are really for
Tarot cards give a great insight into your personal problems and life decisions. They are not a tool for fortune telling. Whilst they can show what your future may hold if you continue on a certain path, your future is not set in stone.
You should only request a Tarot reading when you wish to look deeply into a certain situation that you need clarity on. The Tarot can help you make decisions, see things objectively and can assist you in uncovering your direction in life.
Getting the most from your reading
When you ask for a Tarot reading it is important that you are open and relaxed.
It is the Tarot reader’s job to put your question to the Tarot cards. Your reader will ask you to discuss your reasons for wanting a reading and what your question is. If you do not have a question or you only have a vague idea of what you want to know then the reading will end up being vague. A specific question, put to the cards is always required in order to get the very best from your reading. As detailed above, a good reader will help you to phrase the question in the best way in order to get a detailed response from the cards.
Your Tarot reader will work with the cards until they are in the correct position and then they will then lay the cards and interpret them for you.
Your reading will last between 45 minutes and 1 hour depending on the complexity of your situation.
You should feel free to jump in and chat about the cards – a reading is a 2 way conversation so please be open and honest. Everything that is discussed will be kept confidential.
Please note that our Tarot reader, Debi Barr, is not practicing as a medium so she will not be contacting spirits on your behalf or bringing anyone through. She uses her experience of interpreting the Tarot cards in order to answer your questions and to provide you with help and guidance in accordance with the cards.
