What is Reiki?
“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a natural system to help bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system and benefits may include deep relaxation and the promotion of a calm peaceful sense of wellbeing.
The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is simple. The recipient remains clothed and comfortably lies on a couch or sits on a chair. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively, on or near the body using their intuition and training as a guide. There is no massage or manipulation. Reiki can be used on the person as a whole, or on specific parts of the body. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance.
Reiki is taught by Reiki Master/Teachers, who have trained in the tradition passed on, in person, from Master to student. Students go through a process of initiation/attunement to the Reiki energy. They are then able to treat themselves and others, not only from a personal and emotional perspective, but also as an aid to individual development and spiritual growth.
Choosing a practitioner
It is important to choose a qualified practitioner who has undertaken all the necessary training to understand the theory and practice of Reiki.
You can check whether a Reiki practitioner is registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) by searching the register at www.cnhc.org.uk. By choosing Reiki practitioners registered with the CNHC you can be confident that they are properly trained, qualified and insured. Debi Barr is CNHC registered and holds the Reiki Council Professional Practice Certificate.
She has personally trained her daughter Shannon, who is Rocks n Rituals’ new Reiki Master. Shannon is working towards CNHC regulation so you can be assured of high quality Reiki when you work with her. Shannon has taken over the majority of Reiki sessions at Rocks n Rituals to free Debi up to work as a mentor and teacher.

The 5 Reiki Principles
- Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings
- Just for today I will not anger
- Just for today I will not worry
- Just for today I will be true to myself (do my work honestly)
- Just for today I will be compassionate to myself and others
Note the importance of the words “Just for today”. If you try and live by these principles daily you will make a huge difference to your well-being.
You can read more about using the principles and living the Reiki way by reading Debi’s book – The Reiki Solution, available on Amazon! To download a FREE poster of the Reiki Principles please check out the Free Subscriber Hub where you can access free resources and this poster.
What does a session entail?
During a Reiki healing session Shannon channels universal healing energy through her hands into your body through your body’s energy centres, the “Chakras”. You lie down during the treatment which lasts around 45 minutes. You remain fully clothed during the process and Shannon may only touch the top of your head and the soles of your feet. At all other times her hands will hover about 3-5cm above your physical body. If you prefer Shannon not to touch you at all this is absolutely fine. Reiki energy can pass through clothing, blankets and even plaster casts. If you prefer to sit rather than lie then you may do so. The main thing is that you feel comfortable.
Your first session may take a little longer than the subsequent ones as you will go through a short consultation with Shannon in order to give your consent to treatment. Shannon may also perform a body scan to ascertain areas in your energy field that need attention. This is nothing to worry about! She simply places her hands above your body and moves them from your head to your feet “scanning” your energy field for changes.
During the treatment Shannon uses a series of hand positions to move energy through your chakras. If you have a specific area of pain or discomfort please tell Shannon so energy can be concentrated in this area.
What will I feel during a session?
Each person is different. Some people feel very little and others simply feel relaxed. Some people feel heat radiating from Shannon’s hands and others feel a tingling sensation. Most people do feel very relaxed during and after a treatment and some experience a “floating” sensation during the treatment. It is advisable not to drive or operate machinery immediately after a Reiki session. Shannon often recommends that clients take up to half an hour to ground themselves after a treatment. Reiki energy will go to where it is needed most so you may be aware of Shannon working in one area but feel the energy moving elsewhere in your body. Some people feel weighted to the table, some fall asleep and others see colours and images. Each person is different and each session is unique.
How many sessions will I need?
Again this depends on your personal circumstances. For transformational healing then it is advisable to attend regularly. Experience has shown that the healing effects of Reiki deepen over time. It is like peeling the layers of an onion – the more Reiki you have, the deeper the healing. It is recommended that you try at least 3 to begin with and then see how you feel.
